Last week in the first Saints game in Jacksonville we saw an uneven performance for a team predicted to do great things. The first team defense looked pedestrian as the Jaguars went on a 15 play drive resulting in a early touchdown. Blake Bortles looked like Tom Brady and Cody Kessler went 14 for 17 and resembled our own number 9!
First thing I’m watching for, especially with the first and second defense, is simply intensity or “want to.” This years defensive unit should be a solid top 10 group like last season. Last week though there were many missed tackles and flat out poor angles taken by defenders in general. Hopefully we see Marcus Davenport for the first time in game conditions considering the recent Alex Okafor injury earlier this week.
Offensive line depth is another thing I’m watching closely, the five are set and Jermon Bushrod and Josh LeRibeus will probably be 6 and 7. Rick Leonard is an intriguing prospect and was a effective against the Jaguars last week. Will Clapp former LSU Tiger, has made the most of the Cameron Tom injuries and his versatility give him a real chance to make the 53.
The running back scenario is extremely important for the first 4 regular season games as Mark Ingram will be out for that period. Jonathan Williams has, in my opinion, taken an early lead in potentially filling the Ingram role in the first four contests. Since Arkansas he has been an effective runner against top talent, and if not for injury would likely been a second round pick. He isn’t afraid to mix it up in pass protection either as told by Drew Brees. Shane Vereen has shown some stuff but Terrence West was mediocre at best. Plenty of things to watch for tomorrownight and I for one will be watching the only reality TV that I enjoy
