Cameron Meredith is now a New Orleans Saint. The Saints placed a 2-year, $9.6 million offer sheet for the young wideout on April 6th. Chicago had until 3pm CT today to match the offer on the RFA. At around 2:15pm CT, it was announced that the Bears would let the WR walk and join the Saints explosive offense.
The 6’3″ speedy receiver will join a WR corps that includes Ohio St. product and superstar receiver Michael Thomas, Ohio St. receiver and former Panther Ted Ginn Jr., and possibly third-down God Willie Snead. Snead is also an RFA, so the Saints have right of first refusal if any other team signs him to an offer sheet. The exact opposite position the Saints were in with Meredith.
Meredith’s talents in the slot have been well documented and his size and speed are impressive. We’ve noted many times here that the 207-pounder and his 4.42 40 times are perfect for the Saints offense and the way they use their slot options. If the Saints are looking for a receiver that can get 10 to 15 yards downfield, turn and make a catch, they found him.
It’s been reported that the Bears didn’t match Cameron Meredith’s offer sheet because the felt uncomfortable paying that much for a player that is recovering from a season-ending ACL injury. Curious comments coming from a team that just guaranteed $25M to a player coming off the same injury. But cool.
The Saints may still make some moves at WR in the draft, likely in the day 3 area. Unless someone they can’t ignore drops early. Safe to say that between these 3/4 WRs, any incoming rookie wideouts, Ben Watson, a possible incoming rookie TE, Ingram, Kamara, and Drew Brees at the helm, we’re on pace to have a top-flight offense yet again in New Orleans.
