The first two weeks of the NFL season have seen a lot of headlines. Unfortunately for the Saints, they are in that number as well. Drew Brees will be sidelined for at least six weeks after having thumb surgery. This means Teddy Bridgewater will get the helm (or so we think) starting this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. This will be the third game for the Saints against a playoff team from last year.
The history between these teams has been pretty even. The Seahawks lead the all time series at 8-7. The last time these teams met, the Saints came away with a 25-20 victory. However, Seattle has won six of the last eight match-ups, including two playoff wins at CenturyLink Field. Even though it is very early in the season, this game could have some significance down the road for both squads.
This is only the second time in his tenure with the Saints that Brees will miss time due to injury. Last week’s game against the Rams was tough to watch once he went down. Regardless, Sean Payton is an offensive mastermind and will work the gameplan to compliment Bridgewater as well as Taysom Hill. Payton was also reluctant to mention a starter early in the week. It should be interesting to see how things play out.
On the other side, the Seahawks have won their first two games but barely. Russell Wilson will be the X-factor because of his ability to use his arm and his legs. The Saints defense have to be able to get pressure on him while also keeping him in the pocket. Look for Demario Davis to spy Wilson for most of the game. On defense, Seattle’s linebacking corp is one of the best in the league. On the flip side, their secondary is struggling and banged up. Hopefully the offense will take some early shots with Ted Ginn Jr, who had zero targets last week.
This is the first taste the Who Dat Nation will get of post-Brees football. Luke McCown had a pretty solid outing in his lone start in 2015. However, this will be a crucial stretch but luckily it was at this point and not late in the season. If the Saints can go 3-3, I would call it a win but it will depend on how well Bridgewater and Hill can perform. Everyone call your doctors now and get the blood pressure medication ready because it is going to be a thrilling ride.
