Saints Off-Season Outlook: Quarterback

Now that we have had some time away, it’s time to get back to business. The NFL off-season is almost here and the Saints will have to make a lot of decisions in what could be Drew Brees’ last season in the league. The team is certainly going to hold nothing back after what happened to end the season. This is will be a series going through every position seeing who is on the team, what potential free agents could be targets, who could be gotten in a trade and what prospects could be added in the draft. Starting off with the quarterback, let’s dive into it.

Current Players

Drew Brees | Teddy Bridgewater (re-signed) | Taysom Hill | JT Barrett (PS)

We all know that this could be the last for Brees and we want him to go out on top. Bridgewater is going to be a highly coveted free agent and we can only hope that the culture can keep him here instead of going to a team with money and a lot of uncertainties. Hill is capable of playing any position; however, thinking he could be the long-term successor to Brees is not guaranteed.

Free Agent Targets

Outside of Bridgewater and Nick Foles, who will likely be a starter somewhere, there is not much from a talent perspective that would be enough for the Saints to look after them.

Trade Targets

Josh Rosen | Cardinals

With rumors swirling that the Cardinals may take Kyler Murray with the #1 pick, Rosen may be on his way out. The Saints may not have the pieces that Arizona may want, but it will something to think about if Bridgewater goes elsewhere. Rosen would have all the pieces he needs to be successful but more importantly it would be up to his play to make it all work

Ryan Tannehill | Dolphins (traded to Titans)

The Dolphins have made it known that they want to move Tannehill given his recent injuries. He had a decent year last season and showed he can still play at a starter level. The Saints would have to give up much less and a change of scenery for Tannehill may just be what the doctor ordered. The only strike would be his cap figure for this season. He is in line for a 26 million dollar cap hit and that is definitely not in the Saints’ ballpark.

Draft Prospects

Drew Lock | Missouri

Good size with mobility, one of the more league ready prospects, has inconsistencies with mechanics and accuracy at times.

Daniel Jones | Duke

Three-year starter with not as much talent who is good in progression, played in an RPO system, is hesitant at times and struggles with pressure.

Will Grier | West Virginia

Great at progression and accuracy, has a good pump fake and is aggressive downfield, has a knock on his arm strength and ability to be accurate while moving

Easton Stick | North Dakota State

Three-year captain from a winning program, very mobile in RPO and Pro style offenses, better when rolling out, undersized by NFL standards, below average arm talent and struggles with pressure.

As far as prospects, this QB class is very deep and will be even deeper next year. The Saints have options to evaluate and figure out who will be the next franchise quarterback. No matter who it is, they will have a lot on their plate taking over for one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. The Who Dat Nation will support whomever it may be and they will be in the most complete situation any quarterback could ask for from a team perspective.
