Saints 2019 53-Man Roster Cut-Down Tracker

We’ll continue to update throughout roster cuts which are set to be complete by 4:00 PM EST on Saturday, August 31st.

1:28 PM August 30 – The Saints have placed LB Josh Martin on Injured Reserve per Ian Rapoport
Martin suffered a torn labrum and other injuries during the Week 3 game against the Jets.

1:56 PM August 30 – The Saints have released CB Kayvon Webster, per Adam Schefter
Webster was in the mix for the Saints CB spots. He played mostly dime and special teams over his career. The Saints may be on the look out for this position elsewhere as they have a lack of depth at boundary corner.

2:18 PM August 30 – The Saints have released LB Drew Lewis, per Amie Just
Lewis was signed as an UDFA from the University of Colorado after Alex Anzalone’s injury. Mostly utilized as a camp rotational body, didn’t see much preseason action with the LB corps.

2:33 PM August 30 – The Saints have released WR Simmie Cobbs, per Mike Triplett
Cobbs had 6 catches for 42 yards in his final preseason game with the Saints. The Saints have a ton of talent at WR and this is just the beginning of some tough cuts and decision to made at the position.

2:36 PM August 30 – The Saints have released FB Sam Smith, per Herbie Teope
Smith was signed late after the release of FB Michael Burton this offseason for camp rotation.

2:39 PM August 30 – The Saints have waived WR Cyril Grayson, per Mike Triplett
Grayson played well in his time with New Orleans but simply couldn’t keep up with the production of Deonte Harris on special teams which would have helped him earn a spot. Had Harris not be in the competition, Grayson might be earning a check next week.

2:50 PM August 30 – The Saints have released RB Kerwynn Williams, per Herbie Teope
Williams was one of many RBs to venture within the Saints’ training camp roster in their search for a third RB, but more immediately this is a good sign for Deonte Harris as Williams brought value as a returnman. With Grayson and Williams now off the roster, that’s two players from Deonte Harris’ training camp competition on the street.

2:58 PM August 30 – The Saints have placed LB Colton Jumper on IR, per Herbie Teope
This feels like a stash, don’t rememeber him getting hurt in the final preseason game, but either way it’s good news. Saints get to hang on to a young LB that’s shown promise after a solid preseason this year and it’s good news for Kaden Elliss who is a 7th-round pick roster hopeful.
Further Context on Colton Jumper’s injury here from Deuce McAllister.

1:01 PM August 30 – The Saints have released DE Geneo Grissom, per Herbie Teope
Looked good early but injuries derailed his shot at competing with standouts on the EDGE Trey Hendrickson and Wes Horton.

1:05 PM August 30 – The Saints have waived WR Travin Dural, per Herbie Teope
Saints really like this kid and brought him back once his cleared his physical at the top of training camp. Like Herbie, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back with the team.

4:28 PM August 30 – The Saints have Waived LB Will Compton with an injury designation, per Will Compton
Compton was injured during the final preseason game against the Dolphins. He was a late FA add after an injury was sustained by LB Craig Robertson. Compton’s versatility had him on track to compete for a backup roster spot.

5:15 PM August 30 – The Saints have waived DE Corbin Kaufusi, LB Darnell Sankey, TE AJ Derby, G Ryan Groy, and T Fisayo Awolaja, per NFL Transaction Wire
No real surprises here, even with an impressive preseason performance by Ryan Groy. AJ Derby made good impressions, but the battle will come down to Dan Arnold and rookie Alize Mack.

5:15 PM August 30 – The Saints have waived RB Jacquizz Rodgers, per NFL Transaction Wire. Rodgers was in a tough position to take the running back three spot, even more so as a late addition. This leaves both Dwayne Washington and UDFA rookie Devine Ozigbo for the last spot. The Saints may keep four backs, but it’s not as likely.

12:56 PM August 31 – The Saints have released Safety and stand out Special Teams asset Chris Banjo, per Ian Rapoport
This is easily the most surprising cut so far but with a new special teams coordinator and many talented special teamers on the roster, some changes were expected. $2.5 M of his $9M contract was guaranteed.

1:08 PM August 31 – The Saints have released EDGE/LB Porter Gustin, per Kristian Garic
The UDFA might be a good option for the Saints practice squad if he clears waivers. he played well in a couple of games showing flashes but ultimately couldn’t surpass Trey Hendrickson and Wes Horton on the EDGE.

1:10 PM August 31 – The Saints have released DT Ziggy Hood, per Adam Schefter
Hood had a sack in the final preseason game but with Rankins on the active roster to start the season, some DTs in the competition lost their shot early.

1:35 PM August 31 – The Saints have released TE Dan Arnold, per Nick Underhill (BAE)
After waiving AJ Derby yesterday, cutting Dan Arnold leaves only Alizé Mack as TE3 for now. The Saints may look outside the facility or go back to Arnold when his salary won’t be guaranteed after Week 1.

1:37 PM – August 31 – The Saints have also terminated the contract of veteran DT Sylvester Williams, per Nick Underhill
Good news so far for Taylor Stallworth who looks to be on the verge of continuing his time with the Saints since landing as an UDFA last season.

1:40 PM August 31 – The Saints have waived DB TJ Green, per John Hendrix and Green’s agent
This is looking positive for rookie S Saquan Hampton with both Green and Banjo now off the team.

2:36 PM August 31 – The Saints have waived OL Marcus Henry, per Herbie Teope
Henry played a ton of snaps at center for the Saints over the preseason. A prime candidate for the practice squad after his second encounter with New Orleans.

2:54 PM August 31 – The Saints have waived Rookie TE Alizé Mack per Mike Triplett
The Saints initial 53 will hold only two TEs in Cook and Hill.

3:04 PM August 31 – The Saints placed CB/RS Marcus Sherels on Injured Reserved, per Herbie Teope
Herbie also confirmed that both WRs Kieth Kirkwood and Deonte Harris made the cut. Harris was evident.

3:09 PM August 31 – In the biggest surprise, The Saints waived WR Emmanuel Butler, per Herbie Teope
This comes as a huge disappointment for many Saints fans who were looking forward to Butler making the roster after an impressive camp. Didn’t do enough in the preseason to stick on the initial roster but the Saints will hope he falls through waivers to make the practice squad.

3:16 PM August 31 – The Saints have waived rookie UDFA RB Devine Ozigbo, per Ian Rapoport
Ozigbo was another fan favorite and much like Boston Scott of last year, he falls to the waivers after not making the initial roster. Looks like the Saints will roll with Dwayne Washington who suffered a concussion in the third preseason game, health must not be a long-term concern for now.

3:18 PM August 31Katherine Terrell confirms the final moves:
Michael Ola and Michael Burton Cut, Derrick Kelly and Terrell Williams waived, Cameron Tom and Marshall Newhouse added to IR. David Onyemata moved to Reserve/Suspended for one game and Carl Granderson, who’s dealt with legal trouble all offseason, was reinstated to and eventually off of the exempt list.
Mike Triplett provides clarification on what this means for the Saint sand Granderson.

3:18 PM – August 31 – The Saints also waived WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey, per Mike Triplett
Another option for the practice squad.
