The NFL Draft is right around the corner, and I would like to look at possible trades that I think would enhance this year’s rookie draft selection. As we all know, the Saints traded multiple draft picks to upgrade the team in ways that helped last year and hopefully for years to come. The Saints first pick is in round 2 at #62 overall. So before trading, you have to ask yourself what your goal is. Do you want to move up to an earlier pick, or move backwards to accumulate more picks and current established players. So the current available picks are the round 2 pick, round 5 pick (168 overall), two round 6 picks (177 & 202 overall), and two 7th round picks (231 & 244 overall).
To move up, you have to account for a team’s need to accumulate more whether it is for rebuilding or they feel the draft is deep and feel like they have an advantage by picking more players. Teams in the 2nd round I think that could consider this are: Cardinals, Giants, Bills, Bengals, Lions, and Dolphins.
Potential prospects in 2019 pick range: Nassir Adderly, Irv Smith jr., Jonathan Abram, Garrett Bradbury, Deebo Samuel, Michael Deiter, Kelvin Harmon, AJ Brown, Marquise Brown
Potential prospects in acquired 2019 picks range: Juan Thornhill, Rock Ya-Sin, Chauncey Gardener-Webb, Taylor Rapp, Dalton Risner, Erik Mccoy, Chase Winovich, Jerry Tillery
Potential prospects in acquired 2019 pick range: Chauncey Gardener-Webb, Taylor Rapp, Dalton Risner, Juan Thonhill, Rock Ya-Sin, Erik Mccoy, Chase Winovich, Jerry Tillery, Jace Sternberger
Potential prospects in acquired 2019 pick range: Malik Grant, Foster Moreau, Connor Mcgovern, Greg Gaines, Anthony Johnson
Moving down in the draft is another way to enhance team capabilities. The Patriots are among the teams who do well with this. It is kind of like the lottery, where the more tickets you buy, the better chance you have of winning. If you hit jackpot on one ticket or player out of multiple tries, then I consider the process a win.
