The Saints are in a giving mood and it’s not even Christmas time. Last week, they gave Cam Jordan an extension that was well deserved and sets him up to be a Saint for life. This time around, it is Michael Thomas who is next in line to come aboard the money train. The news came out earlier today on Twitter that talks between him and the team have begun.
Contract extension negotiations between New Orleans and WR Michael Thomas are progressing. Sources say Saints are comfortable making him the highest paid receiver in the game. #Saints

Thomas has been hinting all off-season that he wants to be the highest paid receiver in the league. He is a very competitive player and the Saints know he has earned every right to be given the money. Going into year 4, Thomas has already accumulated a plethora of stats and records. These are just some the things he has accomplished so far in his young career.
– Set the franchise record as a rookie for receptions (92), yards (1,137), and touchdowns (9)
– Set the franchise records for receptions (125) and yards (1,405) in a season
– Set the franchise records for receptions (16) and yards (211) in a single game, separately
– Owns the league record for receptions in first two and three seasons
– Caught 85% of his targets in 2018 which set a new record
– 2nd all-time for yards in first three seasons
And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Thomas goes into every season with the mentality to be the greatest and prove everyone wrong. He certainly has put his stamp on it and there is more to come in the future. The timeline is to have something set in stone by the beginning of training camp. If this happens, it will give the Saints some breathing room next year to focus on other contracts. This move will also set the standard for guys like Amari Cooper and Tyreek Hill (assuming he gets his act together) who are also due for a fresh payday.
Overall, the Saints are comfortable making Thomas the highest paid receiver in the game. The Who Dat Nation feels the same way. Locking him up knowing that Brees is almost at the end of his career will keep the team steadily in their winning ways. With a receiver like Thomas and a fan favorite in Jordan, whomever takes the reign as the next great Saints quarterback will have an arsenal together waiting for them.
