With the divisional round match-up now set for Sunday with the Philadelphia Eagles visiting the Superdome to take on the #1 Seed New Orleans Saints I just wanted to look at some recent history between these teams.
Week 11 – 2018 Season (November 2018)
The Saints came up huge winners in this match-up earlier this season in New Orleans. The Saints racked up 48 points on the Eagles defense only conceding 7 points in return. The 48-7 victory was, for me, the most complete Saints victory this season.
Both the offense and defense come up big in this one with Drew Brees throwing 22 of 30 for 363 yards, 4 TDs and no picks with a QBR of 153.2. Mark Ingram added 103 on the ground with 2 scores, Austin Carr, Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas all caught TDs while Tre’Quan Smith had his best day in a Saints uniform with 10 grabs for 157 yards and a TD.

On the D side, the Saints recorded 3 sacks (Okafor, Robertson and Rankins) plus 3 interceptions of Carson Wentz, 2 of those going to Chris Banjo and 1 to Marshon Lattimore, the defense held the Eagles to just 196 total yards. One of the highlights of the match being a 37 yard score to Kamara on 4th&7 where Sean Payton went full Payton and called a play to fully demoralize the Eagles and rack the score higher.
If this Saints team shows up again on all sides of the ball then hopefully we can get more of the same despite the Eagles now being a Nick Foles led team, not a Carson Wentz one. Brees and Foles do have history of meeting in the postseason, continue reading to find out more…..
Week 5 – 2015 Season (Oct 2015)
The Sam Bradford led Eagles beat the Saints during the regular season in 2015 with a 39-17 victory in Philadelphia. Bradford threw for 333 yards, 2 TDs and 2 Int’s but dominated the Saints with a strong ground game and a defensive display to get the win.
The Eagles racked up 5 sacks on the Saints with Fletcher Cox getting 3 of those and forcing 2 fumbles by Drew Brees as well as an interception. Despite these hits, Brees still threw for 335 yards and 2 scores, although one was in garbage time at the end of the game. This was a time when the Saints didn’t really have a defense to show, getting no sacks in this one and generally being dominated by the Eagles offensive line which shows with the 186 yards on the ground. The opposing rushing game was split mainly between DeMarco Murray (83 yards 1 TD) and Ryan Matthews (73 yards 1 TD) with a little Darren Sproles (27 yards) added for good measure.
Willie Snead and Brandin Cooks had 100+ yard games for the Saints but the defense really let them down giving the Eagles the victory.
Wildcard Weekend 2013 season (Jan 2014)
The last time these teams met in the playoffs, the saints came out victorious when they beat the Eagles 26-24 in Philadelphia with a Field goal by Shayne Graham as time expired. The Saints were previously 0-5 in the postseason on the road until this match-up.
The Eagles were led by…..Nick Foles in this one who threw for 195 yards and 2 scores with no picks with his counterpart Drew Brees throwing for 250 yards, 1 score and 2 picks. The saints won this one with a decent defensive performance which held the NFLs top rushing team to just 80 yards on the day, excellent special teams work (4 made FGs) and some solid offensive rushing for 185 yards, mainly by Mark Ingram who gained 97 on the deck with a score to boot.
Let’s hope that Brees beats Foles again this Sunday but with perhaps a better game personally than their previous encounter in the post season.

The Eagles lead the Saints 17-14 in matches between the teams, however if we look at the Sean Payton era the record for the Saints improves to 6-2 including the win in the wildcard weekend and a divisional round victory too. Overall, only one of the loses under coach Payton came at the superdome, back in 2007. Under Payton there have been no postseason loses to the Eagles.
If the Saints can put in the similar level of performance as the regular season game then there will only be one winner, hopefully history under Sean Payton will follow suit and the Saints will get the win to advance them to the NFC championship game. The Saints must not underestimate this Eagles team and everyone needs to pull together and do their jobs.
