The Saints proved once again how complete of a team they are. The black and gold went on the road in Chicago and came out with a 36-25 win over the Bears. Do not let the score fool you at all. This game was over practically late in the fourth quarter. Here are the moments that made this game so fun to watch:
Block Party
The special teams unit started off the game with a bang. JT Gray came straight through the middle and blocked a punt on the opening drive for the Bears. However, they were not able to recover it in the end zone as Pat O’Donnell swatted the ball out for a safety. Nonetheless, it was a great start to the game. Zach Line would also tip block another punt later in the first half. Darren Rizzi has done a phenomenal job with this squad all season.
Vonn Bell: Fumble Master
After several punts, the Bears tried to move downfield to get some points. The Saints defense was not having it. Anthony Miller took an end around rush for a yard. Enter Vonn Bell. He makes the tackle, strips the ball out and recovers it, eventually taking it all the way for a score. But of course, the refs ruled him down by contact. Regardless, the Saints would score a touchdown to take a 9-0 lead.
Unacceptable Turn Of Events
Rizzi deserves a lot of credit for how well the special teams units have been this year. On the contrary, this game was a mixed bag of emotions. Cordarrelle Patterson would take the ensuing kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown. It was the first one given up this season but could not have been at a more crucial point in the game. Let us hope this is the last time we see it occur.
Refs…..They Did It Again
The Bears were punting with less than a minute left in the first half. Deonte Harris made some moves and went 67 yards for a score right before halftime. But a last, it was called because of holding. The call went against Zach Line but looking more into it, the play seemed nothing out of the ordinary. Once again, the damn refs take points off the board for the Saints for the second time.
Total Domination
Once the second half started, the Saints ran away with the game. Latavius Murray scored on the opening drive with a big catch by Ted Ginn Jr. setting it up. The defense would force a fumble and recover the next drive but Wil Lutz missed a field goal in what was an off day for him. The offense would again score a touchdown after a Bears punt, this time by Taysom Hill on a four yard pass. Lutz would then add a field goal to make it 29-10 early in the fourth quarter. The defense forced a turnover on downs the next drive and Murray capitalized the game with a four yard rush to make it 36-10. The Bears would essentially get two touchdowns in garbage time.
This team is something else. They continue to win as a unit with three victories on the road. Teddy Bridgewater has done exactly what he needed to do. The defense has been damn near elite and are only getting better. Special teams had some good, some bad and some ugly moments. Murray also picked up the slack with Alvin Kamara out with injury. Have to love this team. On to the Cardinals!
