Saints 53 man roster projection with hard choices at wide receiver

It’s that time of the year when we all give our way too early Saints 53 man roster projection for the 2020 season. So no need to doddle, let’s get started. Let us know what you think.

Special teams:

  • Will Lutz
  • Thomas Morestead
  • Zach Wood

Lets kick this thing off with a bang! Kidding, but these three guys are pretty much set as far as I’m concerned. This special teams unit has become a strength of this team. Man, 2016 was a long time ago.

Quarterback:

  • Drew Brees
  • Taysom Hill
  • Jameis Winston

While Tommy Stevens could make an interesting case, I left him off the roster and should be a practice squad candidate if he makes it through waivers. The real question with this group is how the depth chart will follow after Drew never did I think a QB2 battle would be this much fun

Running Backs: 4

  • Alvin Kamara
  • Latavius Murray
  • Ty Montgomery
  • Mike Burton

The addition of Montgomery might be one of the most underrated moves of the offseason. The versatile back has a lot to offer to this offense which will be just another player defenses have to cover. UDFA Tony Jones should be a guy to watch and prime practice squad candidate

Wide Receivers:

This part of the Saints 53 man roster projection might be the most puzzling, especially after the top 3 guys. Tre’Quan isn’t a lock but should make the team. undrafted guys Juwan Johnson and Marquez Callaway are going to make this a really fun camp to watch as they battle each other for a spot. At the moment, I am giving last year’s camp standout Emmanuel Butler the spot but this list is far from being set in stone.

Tight End: 3

  • Jared Cook
  • Josh Hill
  • Adam Trautman

This will be one of the most exciting groups when the season starts and three should contribute

Offensive Line: 9

Starters:

  • LT Terron Armstead
  • LGAndrus Peat
  • C Cesar Ruiz
  • RG Erik McCoy
  • RT Ryan Ramczyk
  • Will Clapp
  • Cameron Tom
  • Patrick Omameh
  • Calvin Throckmorton

This may be one of the deepest, most versatile position groups the Saints have had in a long time. Many of these players can lineup at multiple positions. I am excited by this versatility, knowing the injury history we have at the offensive line position. James Hurst plans to return week 5, He is suspended for the first four weeks, but could be added in after his reinstatement.

Defensive line: 9

  • Cameron Jordan
  • Sheldon Rankins
  • David Onyemata
  • Marcus Davenport
  • Malcom Brown
  • Trey Hendrickson
  • Mario Edwards Jr.
  • Shy Tuttle
  • Margus Hunt

Just like the offensive line versatility and injuries play a big factor in who makes this roster. Veterans Mario Edwards Jr. and Margus Hunt can play both inside and out on the edge. Malcom Roach could also make this roster and push one of these guys out. If not, he should easily make the practice squad.

Linebacker: 6

  • Alex Anzalone
  • Zack Baun
  • Demario Davis
  • Craig Robertson
  • Kaden Ellis
  • Joe Bachie

This group has two rookies making the roster. Kaden Ellis, linebacker who lost his rookie season due to injury, is a guy i’m looking forward to seeing what he does in camp. Kiko Alonso could be a PUP guy early in the season and I just don’t know if he’ll be ready to play to start the year

Cornerback: 6

  • Marshon Lattimore
  • Janoris Jenkins
  • P.J. Williams
  • Patrick Robinson
  • Justin Hardee
  • Keith Washington Jr.

At the moment the one glaring need the Saints have is outside Corner depth. I expect them to address it before or during camp and bring in some veteran competition. CJGJ is listed as a safety but will be the primary nickel back.

Safety: 5

  • Malcolm Jenkins
  • Marcus Williams
  • C.J. Gardner- Johnson
  • J.T. Gray
  • D.J. Swearinger

This group pretty much explains itself. A very good and versatile group.
